Most glaring was that the Islanders doubled the shots of the Penguins 42 to 21. Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee were on another level then the rest, as they both had two goals apiece for New York. Pittsburgh will be glad to get back home for this one, but it will have to turn up the offense especially since Detroit scored seven goals in its game before the Christmas. Heading into the third period against the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit trailed by a score of 4-1. However, a pair of goals from Oskar Sundqvist and one from David Perron spurred a comeback, sending the game into overtime tied at four. However, the Wings were not able to grab the extra point, falling in the shootout. While falling to a team beneath you in the standings is not ideal, how Detroit refused to quit shows how much the team has grown, and how much they believe that they can overcome adversity. That is arguably one of the biggest differences between this season’s group compared to years past. The Red Wings are going to be handed maybe one of their biggest tests on Saturday night. The Golden Knights are one of the best teams in the NHL right now.

The Red Wings showed their youthful exuberance in the win last Wednesday, and though their scheduled contest with the Ottawa Senators last Friday was postponed, they are hoping they built enough momentum in their victory to carry through the Christmas break and into the New Year. They are currently fourth in the Atlantic Division with 35 points, eight back of a Wild Card spot, but six back of the Lightning for third in the division. One team that is comfortably in a postseason position is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Following their loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday, the Penguins are fourth in the Metropolitan Division, holding the top Wild Card spot, with 43 points, nine back of the division-leading Carolina Hurricanes. After a sluggish start, Pittsburgh went into the break as one of the hottest teams in the NHL, winning eight of their last 10 games, with just one loss in regulation.
Guentzel has 40 goals and 41 assists, while Sid the Not-A-Kid, still Pittsburgh's captain, is one goal short of his first 30-goal season since 2018-19, and his 10th overall. The Wings will be without their captain, however: Dylan Larkin has been shut down for the season after undergoing core muscle surgery Monday. Larkin finishes his seventh season with 31 goals and 38 assists. April hasn’t been much fun for the Pens, who lost four straight to open the month before recovering with three wins in their past five games, including a 4-0 take down of Boston on Thursday night.
