After just twenty-two seconds, Northampton earned themselves a penalty after a late Terence Vancooten challenge. Louis Appere stepped up and struck it past Taye Ashby-Hammond’s right to give Northampton the lead within just a minute. Stevenage were now forced to go off-script in order to get the result they wished for. Boro were growing into the game slightly, but it was The Cobblers who got the next chance of the game. Mitch Pinnock raced through the centre of the park before taking aim and firing just wide of the post. Northampton were not slowing down as they searched for a second. Appeals for another penalty were heard loud and clear from the away end, before Taye Ashby-Hammond was forced to deny a low strike.
Stevenage vs Northampton Town on 22 Oct 22 - Match CentreNorthampton Town walk away the victors in a thrilling top of the table clash at The Lamex Stadium... A bumper crowd turned up to The Lamex Stadium to witness a top of the table clash, with third-placed Northampton Town standing in the way of league leaders Stevenage. Steve Evans named three changes from last week’s draw in Gillingham as Jake Taylor, Kane Smith and Michael Bostwick replaced Jake Reeves, Luther James-Wildin and the suspended Jordan Roberts.
Referee Sam Allison decided it was a foul by the Pompey striker and Telford stepped up to score from the spot. Pompey dominated possession and territory as the first half progressed, but their moves broke down in the final third. Their best chance came when Hackett dug out a shot from outside the area that Robson did well to turn around the post. Pigott then felt he should have been awarded a penalty when he tried to lift the ball over Tony Craig and the ball struck the defender’s arm, but Allison waved play on. And Crawley might have extended their advantage before the break, with Telford firing wide from just a few yards out following good work from Tilley.

Reeco Hackett, Joe Morrell, Jay Mingi and Michael Jacobs were in midfield, while Curtis was partnered by Joe Pigott up front. Academy scholars Malachi Osei-Owusu, Harvey Laidlaw and Adam Payce were all included among the substitutes. The visitors looked to make a fast start and a couple of fortunate ricochets provided chances in the opening stages. Hackett was the recipient of the first, but his effort was diverted behind, while a later Curtis attempt flew straight at David Robson. Instead it was the hosts who broke the deadlock on eight minutes after James Tilley went down in the box under Pigott’s challenge.
A corner was given instead but the attack ended with a headed effort over the bar. With ten minutes remaining, The Cobblers took the lead. The ball fell to Kieron Bowie on the edge of the area, as his effort deflected past Taye Ashby-Hammond and into the back of the net. Just minutes later, Stevenage found an equaliser to the delight of the home crowd. Max Clark’s corner was headed at the back post by Carl Piergianni before the ball fell to Alex Gilbey to whack home. There was absolutely no time to rest at The Lamex Stadium as Northampton went straight up the other end to take back the lead.

It was Alex Gilbey who whipped in a pin-point cross, with Dan Sweeney’s header flying just over the bar. Boro managed to create one final chance in the first half as Alex Gilbey received the ball towards the left-hand side, before cutting it onto his right and striking low and hard past the post. Stevenage came out for the second half full of energy ahead of a huge forty-five minutes. Saxon Earley was replaced by Max Clark five minutes into the half to get some fresh legs on the left-hand side. Boro supporters around the ground believed their side had taken the lead before the hour mark.
Crawley Town vs Portsmouth on 30 Aug 22 - Match CentreA controversial late penalty from David Bremang denied Pompey victory at Crawley in their opening Papa John’s Trophy group stage contest. The visitors had earlier turned the game around, with Clark Robertson and substitute Dane Scarlett on target after Dom Telford had also struck from the spot. But the Blues were also denied a bonus point after being beaten 6-5 in the resulting penalty shoot-out. Danny Cowley made 10 changes from the side that beat Port Vale in the league at the weekend, with Ronan Curtis the only player to keep his spot. There was a debut for Josh Oluwayemi between the sticks, while Denver Hume made a first appearance in more than five months after recovering from a back problem. Robertson skippered the side, with Haji Mnoga and a fit-again Zak Swanson completing the back-line.
A spell of persistent Pompey pressure then ended with Dale having a shot deflected over, while Robertson could not guide his header on target from the resulting corner. But it was a better effort from the skipper moments later, with ROBERTSON rising highest to plant the ball into the net from Lowery’s delivery. Teenage midfielder Payce was then given his second appearance in this competition, coming on for Swanson. And it was another youngster celebrating moments later, with SCARLETT collecting Mnoga’s pass, spinning around Craig and drilling a shot into the bottom corner. The visitors continued to threaten as the seconds ticked down, but it was Crawley who snatched a draw in stoppage-time.

Less than half an hour in, Boro boss Steve Evans was shown two yellow cards in the space of two minutes and was subsequently sent to the stands for the remainder of the match. About seven minutes later, Stevenage found an equaliser. Jake Taylor carried the ball from midfield before sending Danny Rose through on goal, and despite pressure from the defender and goalkeeper, the Boro striker slotted it past Lee Burge to level the scoring and liven The Lamex crowd. Stevenage looked like a team with intent in the final stages of the half as the home crowd were right behind them. Kane Smith’s speed and reactions earned Boro a free-kick on the right wing.

Tilley then flashed a dangerous ball across the face of goal and a stretching David Bremang could only turn it into the side netting. Half Time: Crawley 1 Pompey 0 Cowley made a couple of changes at the break, with Morrell and Hume withdrawn for Tom Lowery and Kieron Freeman. It failed to immediately spark the visitors into life and they still struggled to break down an organised Crawley defence. Despite that, the large congregation of Blues fans behind the goal – and to one side – remained in fine voice. Another double switch followed just past the hour mark, as Jacobs and Curtis made way for Owen Dale and Scarlett. The latter thought he should have been awarded a penalty after tangling with Travis Johnson, but Allison again disagreed.
Jamie Reid received the ball inside the Cobblers area before firing into the far bottom corner past Lee Burge, but the linesman’s flag was up for offside. Jamie Reid was then substituted for Luke Norris ten minutes later. The Cobblers remained on the back foot as Stevenage searched for a potential winner. Max Clark delivered a delightful cross into the box, but Dan Sweeney headed over. Down the other end, Northampton appealed for a penalty once again, claiming that Alex Gilbey had hit the ball with his hand in the area.
