Doncaster Rovers vs Stevenage on 25 Oct 22 - Match CentreJordan Roberts’ first half header seals a valuable three points on the road for Boro… Watching on from the press box at the Eco-Power Stadium following his red card on Saturday, Steve Evans named five changes to his starting eleven. Opting for a back four with Carl Piergianni on the bench, Luther James-Wildin and Max Clark were reintroduced to the line-up at full-back. Jake Reeves returned along with Arthur Read and Jordan Roberts in midfield, backing an unchanged top two of Danny Rose and Jamie Reid. Steve Evans’ men started the game looking like a side with a point to prove. Away from home, Boro started on the front foot and looked the more comfortable in possession of the two sides.
The sides first met in The Conference back in 2008 on a day which proved successful for Stevenage legends, as Mitchell Cole, Michael Bostwick and Steve Morison all got their names on the scoresheet. The first Football League encounter between the two clubs was in 2014 as Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale contributed to a 3-0 victory over The Stags at The Lamex Stadium. However, Boro have struggled against Mansfield in more recent times, failing to get one over on the Stags in the last five meetings.
They sit seventh, having won ten from twenty league games. Mansfield’s last few league fixtures have produced a mixed bag of results. Last weekend, The Stags hosted Colchester United and won 2-1 through a Will Swan equaliser and a last-minute winner from Lucas Akins. Before that, though, Clough’s side suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Harrogate Town. Will Swan is Mansfield top scorer this season, netting seven from eighteen matches. Nigel Clough took over as Stags boss in November 2020 and has so far produced a 45. 1% win-rate. He has previously managed Burton Albion, Sheffield United, and Derby County, so he has plenty of managerial experience. As a player, Clough scored over 100 goals for Nottingham Forest under his father, Brian Clough. He also appeared for Liverpool, Manchester City, Sheffield Wednesday and Burton Albion. Clough also has fourteen caps for England. Mansfield and Stevenage have been very familiar with each other over the last decade, having met on nineteen occasions, with Boro winning six.

Within the first ten minutes, Boro were the first side to test the opposition’s goalkeeper. After picking the ball up just outside the Doncaster area, Alex Gilbey tried his luck with a fierce right-footed shot, only to direct it straight at Jonathan Mitchell to make a simple stop. Midway through the half, Doncaster would go agonisingly close to taking the lead. After Harrison Biggins took control of a loose ball in the middle of the park, the midfielder looked to catch Taye Ashby-Hammond off his line from the half way mark. The Boro stopper was beaten; however, the woodwork wasn’t as the ball cannoned off the top edge and behind for a goal kick. Minutes later, Boro took a deserved lead in South Yorkshire.

After just ten minutes though, Boro took an early lead and were looking threatening. Luther James-Wildin’s cross caused issues for the Swindon defence as Danny Rose was able to flick the ball over to Jordan Roberts at the back post whose powerful header found the back of the net. Despite allowing Ronan Darcy to take aim from the edge of the box for a second time, Stevenage refused take their foot off the pedal as they searched for a second goal.

Stevenage vs Swindon Town on 08 Oct 22 - Match CentreJordan Roberts' double sends Boro to the top of Sky Bet League Two... Stevenage looked to continue their impressive campaign with Swindon standing in the way of another three points at The Lamex Stadium. Steve Evans made two changes from Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over Sutton with Jake Reeves and Jamie Reid returning to the starting eleven, replacing Michael Bostwick and Luke Norris respectively. The atmosphere inside The Lamex built very quickly as Stevenage were the side to kick off, attacking towards the packed-out away end for the first half. Boro earned themselves an early corner to excite the home crowd, but the danger was headed away. Swindon grew into the game very soon and were starting to prove why they’re a side battling for promotion. Ronan Darcy attempted to strike low past Ashby-Hammond, but the effort was tame enough for the goalkeeper to collect.
As the second half got underway, Stevenage looked determined to keep a hold of their lead and to try and build on it. Alex Gilbey burst through the midfield before taking on a defender and taking aim, but Sol Brynn held on to deny. Swindon searched for a way back into the game soon after with former Boro man, Remeao Hutton providing crosses from the right-hand side, but Stevenage defended well. As the match hit the hour mark, Stevenage doubled their lead. Alex Gilbey set the ball to Jamie Reid on the left-hand side of the box, as the forward squared it to Jordan Roberts who tapped it home to double his tally for the afternoon. Boro captain, Carl Piergianni was replaced by Michael Bostwick soon after the goal to give fresh legs in defence. Then, Jake Taylor replaced Jamie Reid in order to see out the game.
Mansfield Town were awarded a trip to Wembley Stadium at the end of last season, with a place in Sky Bet League One up for grabs. Unfortunately for the Stags, Port Vale won 3-0 on the day and Nigel Clough’s side remained in Sky Bet League Two. So far this campaign, Mansfield have put up a good fight in hopes of another promotion push.

From a Max Clark throw in on the left high up the pitch, Arthur Read picked up possession before whipping a wicked cross into the danger zone. Back from suspension, Jordan Roberts was also back in the goals and headed home from six yards out. The remained of the half was a balanced display, with half chances for both sides but it would be Steve Evans’ men taking the lead into the break.

It was almost the perfect start to the second period when Danny Rose picked the ball up on the edge of the Doncaster box, but the Barnsley-born forward could only spin and drag his shot just wide of the near post. With over half an hour to go, Steve Evans made a triple substitution in a bid to freshen his team up and make sure the lead wasn’t going to slip away. Jake Taylor, Luke Norris and Saxon Earley entered the fray as Boro entered into a tense final third of the game. Dan Sweeney went close to doubling Stevenage’s lead and putting the game to bed minutes later, when the defender swung his left foot at the ball from the corner of the home side’s penalty area – but again Jonathan Mitchell was there to make the stop and keep the hosts in the game. Carl Piergianni came on for Danny Rose with quarter of an hour to play, just before Doncaster had what looked their best chance of the game.
The strikers, along with Jordan Roberts behind, were full of energy as Jamie Reid’s pressure on the Swindon goalkeeper gave him a chance on goal but the effort was cleared off the line. In the final ten minutes of the half, it was clear that Stevenage had no hesitation to shoot, as the Swindon defence was on the back foot. First, Jake Reeves’ effort was blocked before Luther James-Wildin blasted the ball just over the bar from outside the area. Stevenage soon won the ball back though and played some nice football which resulted in Jamie Reid’s header landing on the roof of the net. Swindon looked to apply pressure on Boro in the closing stages of the half but were unable to find the back of the net from several balls into the box as the referee blew for half-time.
