Summer signings Sam Sherring (AFC Bournemouth), Akin Odimayo (Swindon) and Ben Fox (Grimsby) all started for the Cobblers on a warm evening at Sixfields while a number of other new additions were named on the bench. Darnell Furlong, who had a loan spell at Sixfields back in 2015, was included in a strong looking West Brom starting XI. Jon Brady was forced into an early change when Ali Koiki picked up a knock with another new summer signing, Ryan Haynes, coming on with less than a quarter of an hour played. In a tight first half Mitch Pinnock went close to breaking the deadlock when Louis Appere and Akin Odimayo combined but a West Brom defender was just able to head the ball behind.
It was Eppiah’s first-time back in the matchday squad after the striker re-joined on-loan from Leicester City with Fox making an early return after his knee injury was not as bad as first feared. Prior to kick-off there was a minute’s silence in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II followed by the playing of the National Anthem. Richard O’Donnell was involved in an accidental early collision with Appere but after receiving treatment the former Cobblers goalkeeper was able to continue. Sam Hoskins thought he had put the Cobblers in front midway through the first half but the goal was ruled out for off-side, subsequent replays showing Hoskins level with the Dale defender.

JON BRADY - 'A TOUGH GAME AWAITS ON SATURDAY'Jon Brady previews Saturday’s trip to Swindon Town and says he is under no illusions that this weekend's game will be a tough test for his side. “Every game in this league is tough and there is no tougher game than Swindon away, ” he said. “They have won their last three games and they found a way to get a result at Grimsby despite being down to ten men.
Kieron Bowie then fired a shot just wide as the Cobblers enjoyed a good spell of pressure but boss Jon Brady was forced into a change after Tyler Magloire required treatment, Harvey Lintott coming on in his place. Jon Guthrie broke the deadlock on 42 minutes, the defender with a sublime volley from the edge of the area. Ali Koiki fired just over at the start of the second half but there was a chance for Dale when substitute Liam Kelly shot wide from 12-yards. The Cobblers were awarded a penalty when Ben Fox, on for Kieron Bowie, was fouled and although Sam Hoskins' spot-kick was saved by Richard O’Donnell, Hoskins wasn’t to be denied on the follow-up. Hoskins had his second goal of the afternoon and tenth of the season on 81 minutes, the Sky Bet League 2 player of the month for August on the end of a teasing cross in from Fox to tap home at the back-post. Josh Eppiah replaced Jack Sowerby for the final few minutes as the Cobblers closed the game out to make it three wins on the bounce in September.

Orient made their way into the game and came closest to breaking the deadlock when Dan Happe headed a cross from Theo Archibald against the crossbar shortly before the interval. Cobblers manager Jon Brady was booked for his protests when Fox was red carded by referee Ollie Yates. And, with a man advantage, Orient dominated possession. Paul Smyth and George Moncur both had efforts denied by Burge but despite much endeavour, the hosts' final touch was often found wanting, to leave both teams without a win in three matches. Jonny Maxted came to the Cobblers rescue a couple of times, denying Jed Wallace and then diving at the feet of Daryl Dike to avert the danger. The first 45 ended goalless however, both sets of players continuing to build up their match sharpness ahead of the new campaign. Danny Hylton replaced Appere in the only Cobblers change at half-time but it wasn’t long before Kieron Bowie, signed on a season-long loan deal from Fulham earlier in the week, also joined the action. Daryl Dike put West Brom in front on 50 minutes although there were some protestations from the Cobblers defence who clearly felt the goal should have been disallowed for off-side..
Leyton Orient 0-0 Northampton TownLeague Two high-flyers Leyton Orient were frustrated by 10-man Northampton Town in a goalless draw at Brisbane Road. After Northampton had Ben Fox sent off in the 48th minute for a dangerous tackle on Craig Clay, the visitors turned in a plucky defensive second-half display. Despite their numerical advantage, Orient were unable to break down a water-tight defence well-marshalled by Jon Guthrie, for whom goalkeeper Lee Burge was seldom extended. The Cobblers enjoyed the better opening exchanges with Mitch Pinnock twice drawing saves from Lawrence Vigouroux.
