It’s way up there. And I saw this big man walk in there with his players and talking and really having great relationships. And that always stuck with me. And that is the new NHL is to be able to be tough on the players and have high expectations of your team and what they should accomplish, but at the same time, the following day, not leave a scar and be able to have that communication, where you can really sit down and talk to them and almost be their friends. The game’s changed in that manner, and he does a great job.
So everything’s modern, everything’s new. And to be honest with you, living in AZ is a pretty good spot to play hockey. You come out of the rink, it’s got some warmth to it, it’s got some sunshine to it. It’s a nice place to play. Now along with the new facilities, it’s good. It’s not perfect. And I explained that to our players, and we had a partnership with our players in helping build a lot of the dressing rooms. And I said to them, “When it’s temporary, it’s never perfect, but it’s good enough to get us by right now.
The 24-year-old stud blueliner has this year and another two left on an affordable contract with a $4. 6 million AAV, and he made it crystal clear in September that it would be “mutually beneficial” if the rebuilding Coyotes move him to greener pastures so he doesn’t waste away without a chance of playing for a true contender.
The Wild are also coming off a loss 4-3 loss, this time in regulation to Toronto. Goalie Matt Murray was the first star of the game for Toronto in the win. Murray is 4-0-1 in his return from injury. The score was tied at 2-2 at the beginning of the second but then Murray shut it down from there where the Wild just could never quite get back in the game. It was a disappointing night for Minnesota goalie Marc-Andre Fleury who returned from an injury of his own. The Coyotes were down 3-1 but made a tremendous rally to force overtime against the Red Wings.
And listen, we’re going through the rebuild, so you can take poundings at times and it wears on you. You’re on and off the plane and you have a few losses, it really wears on you. But I think what we’ve done with our culture, getting our guys to really enjoy where they’re at, and in working through this process and getting better every single day, they’ve dug into it. And you can see how we fight every single night. I think we probably lead the league in being in a game and going into the third period. Our guys fight, and that’s due to our coaching, our culture, and how we’ve really dug into the process behind the scenes. How does (coach) Andre (Tourigny) fit into all that? Because I watched that practice when you guys were in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago, and he is a true teacher.
… I know I’ve talked to Marco Rossi a lot, and he says it’s the best coach he’s ever had. A really interesting guy. I go way back in junior when I was scouting, and I was up in Rouyn. And I always tell this story about him is I went into Rouyn and they were in first place at the time, and I couldn’t believe it. Because in my scouting history, they’d never been up there. And I saw this guy behind the bench barking orders, and then, there’s one restaurant to eat afterwards in the town of Rouyn, and it’s close to where Santa Claus lives.
I want people with more knowledge, more experience, to make better decisions. There’s so much going on from analytics to contract work. You’ve got to have really smart people around you. And I gained a lot of that knowledge from working with Doug and seeing the people that he surrounded himself with. Mullett Arena is a must-see atmosphere. It’s fun, it’s unique, but this is not just a one-year experiment. You’re going to be here for a while.
That’s the best thing about him is he gets the most out of the player, but at the same time, he can have a great relationship with the players. There’s always a difference in the NHL of rebuilding and tanking, that that’s the dirty word, but it does feel like you guys are in that rebuild mode, that you’re not sitting there and trying to go for that top, top pick. Is that fair or not? Well, I think, with the way that our team is built and how we’ve liquidated our players and got back assets, you’d be crazy not to think that way. Probably the difference with us is that our players on the ice don’t really think that they’re in the rebuild/tank mode. They really believe that they got a chance every night.
What was it like working in that management team, to win that Stanley Cup, to just see the way that an organization could build and make bold moves at times? Doug was a great boss. He was great to work with, especially on the amateur side. Him and I, I felt, at times, we were almost dynamic together, and it had to do with our personalities coming together. We really worked well together. I think, for the most part, that staff was amazing. Sometimes you had Marty Brodeur, Al MacInnis, Keith Tkachuk, the Dave Taylors of the world, Larry Pleaus of the world. It was just a great staff to be around. And I build my staff much similar to that, where I always want smarter people around me.
“The games at Mullett have been a blast. I think anyone in the league will tell you it’s a little more intimate from a fan standpoint. They’re closer to the ice. They get a true feel for how fast the game is and how good and high-end skilled players are. And anyone will tell you from last year’s team, even being an away person on an away team, it’s better than going out all the way to Glendale for a game.
”“It’s been fun. It’s been challenging, but I think the guys have done a hell of a job adjusting and putting in the work and I think a lot of teams wouldn’t have guessed we’d be where we’d be right now, especially with that schedule, ” Kassian said of the 12-16-5 Coyotes, who have already played 22 road games, including 14 in a row. “But in order for us to continue on the trend we’re going to have to make this place hard to play for an away team.
It could be a unique place. And we always say, it’s much similar to Tampa. We want to become the new Tampa. This rink will give us that chance. (Michael Russo / The Athletic)Are you surprised at where you are in the standings considering you’ve been on the road for pretty much the entire season? And here you are, you’ve put yourself, with all the home games coming up, in actually a pretty good position, at least in the standings. Yeah, yeah, our team fights. I think we’ve sunk a lot of our time and energy into culture and how to make players kind of thrive in that culture.
