It was the 20th minute before Tom Hamer had the chance to launch a long throw but he took it short to Corrie Ndaba, whose high cross was easily gathered by keeper Luke McGee. When he sent his next throw long, it was headed out for Burton’s first corner, on the right, in the 23rd minute but that came to nothing and the game had, at this stage, been dire. Tyler Onyango battles to get forward policed by Dominic Bernard of Forest Green Rovers.
Onyango, again finding a pocket of space, crossed low from the right a minute later but it evaded Victor Adeboyejo. In first-half stoppage time, Hamer launched a long throw and then won a corner when the ball eventually came back to him. From this, the Brewers took the lead. Taylor launched it high from the left, it went over McGee’s attempt to gather it and Brayford gleefully headed it in at the far post.
Garratt was booked for timewasting in the 82nd minute as he took his time over a goal kick, Oshilaja followed him into the book for a late challenge on Matt, then Taylor was booked for failing to retreat at a free kick. The Brewers had been hanging on but in the 89th minute, they doubled their lead. Kamwa, who had been really lively, escaped down the right, reached the bye-line and when he tried to square the ball for Adeboyejo, it looped up off a defender and Kamwa was able to head it across McGee and into the net.

The Brewers got on the attack at the start of the second half and Smith, bursting inside from the right, was fouled just outside the box in the 49th minute. It was a free kick in which four Burton players ran over the ball before Cameron Borthwick-Jackson rolled it short to Onyango, whose cross was deflected out for a corner.

Brewers make it two wins from two at ChristmasCaptain John Brayford scored a goal on his 35th birthday as Burton Albion secured another vital festive win, beating fellow League One strugglers Forest Green Rovers 2-1. Bobby Kamwa added a second late in the game, which was just as well, as Rovers pulled one back in stoppage time, but the win has lifted the Brewers out of the bottom four for the first time this season. Albion again made two changes, one enforced by injury to Sam Hughes, who had needed treatment against Lincoln City on Boxing Day. Adrian Mariappa came in for him, while Tyler Onyango returned to the starting line-up at the expense of Kamwa.
They were living dangerously though and in a break in play, with Oshilaja needing treatment, Maamria was full of instructions for his team. The Brewers made their first change after 77 minutes, Kamwa replacing Smith. A free kick on the right touchline offered Rovers the chance to put the ball into danger again and a shot from the edge of the box by Cargill was deflected wide for a corner. Kamwa made two good interventions helping out the defence as his first two contributions.
Forest Green pulled one back in the third minute of six added when Peart-Harris collected a headed pass from Matt and blasted the ball past Garratt from 15 yards. It made for a nervous finish for Albion but they hung on. It had not been a great game but this one was all about the result. All of our Burton Albion news appears daily in the Burton Mail. Josh March beat the offside trap in the 51st minute on the right but Mariappa cut out his cross at the expense of a corner, then a cross from the left looked like reaching Myles Peart-Harris in a dangerous position in the box until he slipped and lost his footing. It was a let-off for Burton. Hamer launched a long throw from the left a couple of minutes later and when the ball fell for Smith, he volleyed high over the bar from a good position. Rovers were pressing, though, and Mariappa again had to make a sharp intervention to concede a corner, which Oliver Casey headed over for the home side. Forest Green sprung the offside trap again when March ran clear in the 66th minute and when Ndaba challenged him, the referee gave a penalty. Matt took it, not very well, and Garratt saved it to his left to keep the Brewers ahead.
(Image: Richard Burley/ Epic Action Imagery) Jonny Smith had moved to the left and when Deji Oshilaja picked him out he won a corner, which was followed by Oshilaja winning another on the right. Smith then won a third on the left as Burton finally had a spell of pressure around the half-hour. Onyango went on a run down the middle in the 37th minute and his attempted shot was blocked out for a corner on the right. Again this had no result and when Rovers broke, Garratt left his area to head clear.
EFL Set For Huge Month Of Live Coverage During 2022 FIFA World CupThe EFL is set to take centre stage domestically as Leagues One and Two play on throughout the duration of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with ALL games available to watch via streaming or on TV, if fans cannot get to the game. With action in the top two tiers paused, full League One and Two programmes will take place on the 18th-19th November and 2nd-4th December, with fans able to watch Saturday 3pm kick-offs via club streaming platforms over the World Cup period. The increased availability comes due to the Saturday afternoon closed window (Article 48) not applying during the tournament, meaning that where fans cannot get to a match, then there is still an opportunity to watch EFL teams in action.
Forest Green won the game’s first corner in the second minute but when Baily Cargill’s attempted shot looped high into the air, Ben Garratt was able to catch it comfortably. The home side had much of the early possession without creating anything of note and had a chance to send a free kick into the Burton box in the eighth minute but, not for the first time, a cross was ballooned harmlessly out of play. They had a second corner in the 12th minute and when the ball fell for Jamille Matt, he hooked a shot over from 10 yards. The Brewers, playing against a stiff breeze, had not got going and Dino Maamria, frustrated, was spoken to by referee Thomas Kirk as he became more animated.
