That second goal was duly delivered by Mitch Pinnock on 37 minutes, the midfielder blasting a shot beyond Ward after some excellent approach play by Louis Appere. The Cobblers had largely dominated the first half playing at a high tempo but Sutton did have a chance to pull a goal back in stoppage time, only for Joe Kizzi to head over from close range. The visitors were however right back in the game at the start of the second half when Omar Bugiel headed home a left wing cross. Boosted by that goal Matt Gray’s side were back on level terms just after the hour mark, Donovan Wilson with a sharp finish. Sam Hoskins and Max Dyche came on in a double change and Hoskins was quickly involved in the action, forcing Ward into a smart save with a cross/shot the Sutton keeper had to tip over the bar.
Appere dusted himself down to take the penalty which he dispatched with aplomb. Mitch Pinnock drove a shot just wide from the edge of the area and Taye Ashby-Hammond made a good save from Sam Sherring as the Cobblers, who were showing no signs of letting up, had an appeal for a second penalty turned down by referee Geoff Eltringham. Stevenage manager Steve Evans was sent to the stands after being shown two yellow cards in rapid succession but the home side were back on level terms on 35 minutes, Danny Rose equalising against the run of play. The home side then had a chance to go in front just before half-time but Dan Sweeney headed over from Alex Gilbey’s free kick. Jamie Reid shot straight at Lee Burge and also had a goal ruled out for off-side in the opening stages of the second half while for the Cobblers Ali Koiki shot wide and Kieron Bowie had an effort deflected behind following a good counter attack and flick on by Appere.

After a fairly quiet opening fifteen minutes it was the Cobblers who made the breakthrough, Brighton loanee Marc Leonard finding the bottom corner with a low strike from the edge of the area. Lewis Ward saved from Jack Sowerby, Kieron Bowie had a shot deflected behind and Shaun McWilliams also went close with a shot just wide as the Cobblers pressed for a second goal.

Northampton 0-0 Tranmere: Goalless draw at SixfieldsSaturday 3 December 2022 17:40, UK Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Highlights of the Sky Bet League Two game between Northampton and Tranmere Northampton lost ground on the top two in League Two as they were held to a goalless draw by Tranmere at Sixfields. Mitch Pinnock saw an early shot blocked for Northampton and Sam Hoskins fired just wide from long range, but the game's first big chance came at the other end where Josh Hawkes was denied by Lee Burge after 15 minutes. Burge then had to be at his very best to produce an outstanding double save, somehow keeping out both Kane Hemmings' initial header and then Paul Lewis on the rebound.
